If you want to experience epic panoramic views of Tidal River and Wilsons Prom’s isolated coastline, the Mount Oberon summit is the walk for you! Mount Oberon is a steep 3.4km hike from Telegraph Saddle car park all the way to the top (6.8km return, allow 1.5 hours). Reaching the top of the summit, many rocks and boulders filter through the high country; pick one, take a seat and embrace the beauty of the mountains, rivers and the sea.
There’s plenty of hype about a sunrise at the summit of Mount Oberon but sunset is just as impressive. The options: Catch the day break as the sun pokes through the mountainous region or watch the sun fall where the ocean meets the horizon – you’re pretty spoilt for choice.
Chances are you’ll share the walk with native wildlife too… keep on the lookout for wallabies and wombats.
How to get to Mount Oberon
- Travel towards Telegraph Saddle car park. During peak periods such as Summer school holidays and weekends from November to April this car park is closed. A free shuttle bus can take you there from Tidal River.
- Park your car. The walk can be found at the top of the car park around to the right. A number of day walks and overnight walks start here so make sure to follow signs for Mt Oberon summit.
- Continue on the gravel road for 2.9km until you reach a fenced station that looks like a mobile reception tower. Locate the set of stairs opposite the gates to the station and walk the last section to the summit.

“After a funny night sharing our campground with a number of curious wombats, @mattcharlesworth and I set our alarms for a 5am hike to the summit of Mount Oberon – We packed up our tents and drove to the Telegraph Saddle car park. The carpark was already half full and instantly thought the summit would be busy. However, after the 3.4km, leg burning walk we were the only people in sight!
We experienced a spectacular sunrise as the rays broke through a cloudy sky. The sun lit up the mountain range behind Mount Oberon and soon after shone a golden light over Tidal River and the ocean – it was simply breathtaking. I highly recommend this walk to anyone that loves a challenge; the view from the summit is worth every step. ”
Best Conditions
Sunrise or sunset; they’re both sensational from the summit. Clear day. Due to the incline/decline of the walk up and down it would be best suited for dryer months of the year.

Moderate to difficult with steep inclines and descents.

Plenty of cloud cover in the morning but it just can’t dampen the views from up the top. The walk is fairly difficult but most people should be able to handle it.
Majority of the walk actually isn’t that exciting – Just a gravel emergency access road without any views until the very top. Still, this is one of the best views you can find at Wilsons Prom until you start heading onto the overnight tracks!
