About Griffiths Island Lighthouse
Griffiths Island is located 3h 30 mins drive from Melbourne city, in the charming fishing village of Port Fairy. This tiny island is only accessible by foot through a short causeway to the mainland and it’s an amazing little sanctuary; great for spotting native birds and wallabies. Southern Right Whales frequent this coastline between June and October too. You can follow the walking track to loop the island which takes roughly one hour which also includes some beach walking. 1.2km to the lighthouse or 3.1km for the full loop. For the best light and photography opportunities, try to visit the island early in the morning or at sunset.Highlights

“We left Warrnambool around 6AM and started driving towards Port Fairy, aiming to catch the Griffiths Island lighthouse in a soft early-morning light. The roads were completely deserted at that time in the morning even during the Summer holidays. Google maps was a bit confusing reaching Griffiths Island but we eventually made it. We parked our car at Martins Point and started walking towards the footpath that leads to the island. On the causeway, you will find a sign that indicates two different ways to explore the island. We decided to take the shortcut as we were a little later than planned (distracted by some surfers we found nearby catching waves at sunrise, a classic when you road trip along the Australian coastline). On the walk, keep an eye out for native birds and wallabies roaming around. Once you reach the lighthouse there are plenty of photo opportunities, sit down, and enjoy the relaxing views. You can decide to keep following the walking path that loops the island or go back to the carpark the same way you arrived.”Getting to Griffiths Island Lighthouse
- Travel towards Martins Point car park.
- Park in the car park on the left facing the marina.
- Proceed on foot towards the causeway that leads to the island.
- At the junction, continue left for 1.2km towards the lighthouse.
