Explore Steavenson Falls in Marysville

Steavenson Falls in Marysville is one of the highest waterfalls in Victoria at an impressive 84-metres tall. Take the easy 350-metre walk to the base of the falls via the well maintained path and continue another 800-metres up the mountain to reach the upper lookout. The lower lookout offers a post card worthy perspective but some of the drops are obscured. It’s worth zig-zagging up the more difficult trail to appreciate the sheer size of this spectacle. You can even experience Steavenson Falls after dark; the flat path and falls are floodlit between dusk and 11PM every night. Wheelchair access and well-maintained facilities are just a few reasons why the shire charges $3.00 (coins only and no change given) to park at the end of Falls Road. Option to take the 4-kilometre walk from Marysville along Tree Fern Gully to reach the falls or extend the walk past the falls to Keppel Lookout; another 4.5-kilometres into the hills.

How to get to Steavenson Falls:

1. Travel Towards the car park at the end of Falls Road.
2. Park at the end of Falls Road or as close as possible.
3. Walk 350-metres on the flat track to the lookout that spans the river.

“I would not consider Steavenson Falls a “hidden gem”, it’s very well visited but it still makes The Trail as it’s a must-see in Marysville. The facilities are well managed and make this natural wonder accessible to all which is a huge plus – we all need a dose of nature in this busy day and age. The track up to the top lookout is steep and muddy but very rewarding. A good viewpoint to see the regrowth after the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009 that devastated much of the surrounding area. I’m already making plans to visit at night to capture some more photos of Steavenson Falls under lights.”

Best Conditions:

Flows all year round but best in Spring after rain.

Difficulty:

Very easy. Camping? Yes, free camping at Keppel Creek or Andersons Mill (both 20 minute drive) Dogs? Not Permitted. Toilets? Yes, at car park.
